WHY and WHY NOW:
November 30, 1999 - 50,000+ people filled the streets of Seattle to halt a round of World Trade Organization negotiations that would have expanded trade agreements that undermine human health, social justice, and ecological responsibility around the world. In advance of the coming WTO meetings in Geneva, Switzerland (Nov 30 - Dec 2, 2009) - the non-profit group Public Citizen and their Global Trade Watch division are promoting screenings of the film the Battle of Seattle all over the country in conjunction with a postcard writing campaign. They are sending 50,000+ postcards to the White House in advance of the meetings to remind the Obama administration that the world is still watching and that WTO meetings are the place for him to make good on fair trade campaign promises.
FOR PERMIES --
How does an understanding of the patterns of international trade clarify what the ethics and whole-systems solutions encouraged by permaculture have to offer?
- Alice
p.s. This is the hollywood production released in 2008. There are several other independent and documentary style movies about Seattle N30 events. If there's interest, we can perhaps screen some of the others in the future.
