DESCRIPTION:The New York Permaculture Meetup Group\n\nYou will design your
own indoor ecosystem using permaculture design principles\, which can be ap
plied to any living space\, no matter how small\, to create beauty and func
tion. Would you like to grow houseplants successfully? In this workshop B
renda Rivera\, board member of the Metropolitan New York Chapter of the Ind
oor Gardening Society of America\, will help us discover how plants can cre
ate a more regenerative space indoors\, and learn about species that are mo
st likely to be appropriate for your space. After a brief introduction to p
ermaculture learn how to get the most out of your plants while caring for t
hem in an eco-friendly way. Workshop highlights: * Create simple and
fast design exercises for selecting strategic locations for your plants.
    * Make a customized plan to work with as the growing season begins.
 * Diagnose houseplant health: Everyone is encouraged to bring plants in for
an on-site diagnosis (or bring photos for large plants). A.R.E. of New Yo

SUMMARY:Rainwater Harvesting Part 1: presention with Q & A
DESCRIPTION:The New York Permaculture Meetup Group\n\nThis is Part 1 of a t
wo-part class that can be taken in combination or separately. Tyler Caruso\
, a student at Pratt's Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment\, h
as designed this class for people who are interested in learning more about
rainwater harvesting in non-potable applications\, such as landscape irrig
ation. In the face of the global climate crisis\, rainwater harvesting is a
simple step to many pollution problems. When it rains in New York City\,
impervious surfaces such as rooftops\, driveways\, parking lots and streets
funnel large volumes of rainwater into the sewer system. But storms that p
roduce over an inch of rain overwhelm the waste-water treatment plant\, whi
ch then discharges raw untreated sewage mixed with the storm-water into the
surrounding rivers and harbor and bays (this is also called combined sewer
overflow or CSO). Making matters even worse\, most of the rainwater is als
o turned into run-off\, accumulating pollutants on the pavement and carryin
g them into the surrounding bodies of water. Millions and millions of gallo
ns of fresh water are lost due to both of these conditions every year. But
by feeding some of this storm-water into a rain garden\, we can each contri
bute to minimizing these problems\, as well as recharging the ground water
and enriching our garden soil. Plants much prefer rainwater to chlorinated
 city water.  The workshop will offer a mix of practical information (i.e.\;
how to calculate how much rainwater comes off your home\, the function and
design of rain gardens\, and more) as well as hands-on experience as we im
plement a design and install an actual rain garden. July 31\, 1-3:30 The S
aturday afternoon presentation (with Q &A) will provide an overview of rain
water harvesting: techniques—active and passive methods of water collection
\, history\, best management practices\, and applicability to conserving ra
infall as a natural resource. August 1\, 11 am - 3 pm The Sunday workshop
is geared towards do-it-yourself types who want to learn about installing
their own rainwater harvesting systems. During lunch there will be an oppo
rtunity to meet individually to discuss your rainwater plans and projects.

SUMMARY:Greywater Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The New York Permaculture Meetup Group\n\nWe have already reach
ed peak oil and we are approaching peak water. Now is the time to find out
how to reuse greywater—the waste water from your washing machine\, shower a
nd bathroom sink—to make your flowers bloom. Greywater systems for reusing
water in the landscape or in your home can save water and money and provide
superior treatment. In this workshop I will outline the various greywater
systems and other conservation strategies you can use to cut your water bil
l and save our lakes\, streams and oceans. We’ll cover: · Benefits of grey
water systems · Getting clear on objectives · Regulatory considerations ·
Site characteristics · Choosing a greywater system · Understanding what
plants work best for greywater · Greywater dos and don’ts · Water conser
vation and efficiency It just so happens that much of what we’ll be discu
ssing is illegal under current NY plumbing codes. But codes be damned! This
workshop will show you how to be a discreet and responsible greywater outl
aw or how to be a more informed and responsible person. Tyler W.D. Caruso
is a student at Pratt's Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment $
 15 to 5. Suggested. Pay what you can. \n\nBrooklyn\, NY 11217 - USA\n\nS
